Custom Water Features for Southwest Wisconsin Properties
Four Seasons Landscaping designs and builds custom ponds, waterfalls, and water features in Platteville, WI — adding sound, movement, and a calming focal point to your landscape.
Water Features That Transform Your Landscape
There's a reason water has always been a centerpiece of great garden design — the sound and movement of water are immediately calming, the visual interest changes through the day as light hits the surface, and a well-designed pond or waterfall becomes the feature that draws your eye (and everyone who visits) into the landscape.
Four Seasons builds water features as integrated landscape elements — not as standalone plastic liner kits dropped in the yard, but as natural-looking, properly engineered features that work with the topography and character of your property. We integrate water features with retaining walls, planting, lighting, and surrounding hardscape to create a cohesive, designed landscape.
Water features require more technical knowledge than most hardscape — proper liner installation, pump sizing, filtration, and winterization are all part of a long-lasting feature. We design for Wisconsin's winters from the start so your water feature survives and looks great year after year.

FAQ — Ponds & Water Features
Yes — ponds can winter over successfully in Wisconsin with the right design. Koi and other fish can survive under ice if the pond is deep enough (at least 2–3 feet) and a de-icer or aerator keeps a small hole open for gas exchange. Plants are cut back in fall. Pumps can either be winterized (turned off) or run year-round depending on the feature type. We design for Wisconsin winters from day one so your feature holds up long-term.
A well-designed, properly filtered pond requires moderate maintenance — spring cleaning, regular skimmer cleaning, water quality monitoring, and fall prep. Pondless waterfall features require less maintenance than fish ponds since there's no fish waste or complex water chemistry to manage. We can design features at different maintenance levels and will be honest about the ongoing care commitment during the consultation.
A pondless waterfall recirculates water from a hidden underground reservoir up through a stream or waterfall, with no exposed pond. The water disappears into a gravel-covered basin and is pumped back to the top. Pondless features have the sound and movement of a waterfall without the open water — making them safer for families with young children, easier to maintain, and less prone to algae issues. They're an excellent option for smaller yards or homeowners who want water interest with lower maintenance.
Yes — koi and goldfish are the most common choices for backyard ponds in Wisconsin. A fish pond requires adequate depth (2–3 feet minimum), proper filtration to manage fish waste, aeration, and some provision for winter survival. We design fish-friendly ponds with the right depth and filtration from the start. If you're considering fish, tell us during the design consultation so we can spec the system correctly.
A well-built water feature with a quality EPDM liner should last 20–30 years or more before the liner needs replacement. Pumps and filtration components have shorter lifespans (5–15 years) and can be replaced as needed. The stone edging and surround, if installed on a proper base, should be essentially permanent. Liner punctures from sharp rocks are the most common failure mode — we use proper underlayment to prevent this.
